"Art has always questioned its primary function, wavering between the logic of representing subjects, places and phenomena that belong to the sphere of the senses, and the visualisation of what is visible to the naked eye and does not belong to the realm of the interior and the emotions. And it is the visualisation of this boundary that is the subject of her paintings.
She chooses Cilento as the place to represent, which the German artist chose as a source of inspiration after a trip to Italy in 2009. But, in her paintings, the landscapes and views of this land merge and blend with the artist herself, her interior, her experience. In this process, the search for an intimate and profound bond with nature manifests itself, aiming at a gradual and total identification with it.
‘Painting is for me a daily and profound inner need,’ says the artist about herself. The soothing and liberating power of art is something well established, a liberating act that aims to give vent in a healthy and controlled manner to libidinal impulses that lie deep within us. It is, for the psychology of art, what drives the creativity of artists. But for those who enjoy art, there is also a real need: we all need to visualise that boundary, to make sense of who we are, to restore order to the flow of events in which we are immersed, to find our compass when the chaos and frenzy of our days give us the impression of having lost all points of reference.
Looking through the eyes of someone else has always been one of the great potentials of art. It is an important process that allows us to relativise, to accept otherness, to realise that our way of seeing things is never the only one possible. Sonja Kalmanfi‘s gaze on the landscape, on Cilento, is a dreamy, idyllic gaze, with a strong utopian drive; it is not the absolute truth, but it is her truth. It is a bridge between what is real and what is possible, and seeing these familiar places through her eyes can help us to re-imagine them in terms of the infinite potential our landscape has to offer when it is set free."
